Hi

Wife in bed sleeping off illness, baby sleeping in sling on my right hand. Take pity on my lack of posting.

Watched Rashomon last night. Good movie. Good to finally see what everyone is so excited about.

Listened to about ten minutes of the commentary on the DVD before the baby woke up. (I can't really afford the luxury of watching each movie twice just to get the commentary too, but I can try.) Some guy who wrote some books about Japanese film, blah blah. Totally shocking: how can we talk about Japan and Japanese film without even mentioning the war? At least in Germany they talk about it. In polite Japanology it's tabu.

I've been reading recent political and military history, too. Crusade is a good book about Gulf War I. I finished David Frum's GWBush White House memoir, The Right Man, which actually contained some interesting tidbits about Bush's character. He xeriscaped his Crawford ranch, for one.

Also interesting was Frum (a Canadian by birth) explaining why Canada was snubbed in the post-9/11 speeches and the State of the Union. Not for any sinister reason, nor to get back at Chretien or his policies, but rather for the traditional reason: Canada made no noise, so everyone forgot about it. This is encouraging, because it means that Paul Martin will have an easy time repairing US-Canadian relations. Just do something nice and memorable. Send us flowers, or something.
