Kaija and I have been doing a little chemistry. So far we’ve done one experiment repeatedly: vinegar + baking soda = fun. Tonight I asked her to document the process by drawing a picture of our materials and dictating the procedure to me (note the renumbering of the steps.)
The box in the middle is Arm and Hammer baking soda. The handle container is a 4L jug of vinegar. Food coloring. Graduated cylinder (I love that she included the number detail on the graduated cylinder).
We did purple and then orange. She spoons in the baking soda, I add the water, she adds the food coloring. I put about 50 mL vinegar into a small beaker, and she makes it fizz and spill over. And she’s already developing good lab technique in tilting the cylinder to add powder and swirling it to mix the colors.
The best part of tonight, though, was that after we were done she spontaneously decided to wash all the glassware!
