Hate Crime Retrospective

Tuesday, January 18th, 2005

Last night I found a blog entry by a then-freshman at Scripps giving an on-the-ground reaction to last year’s “cross-burning” thing at HMC. I’ve included the full text in the extended entry section because I don’t know how long that blog (which appears abandoned) will stay up.

MIA

Tuesday, January 18th, 2005

It’s not that I haven’t been around. It’s that there’s nothing terribly interesting going on in the world, and that this whole being-a-father thing takes up a lot more time than I would have expected.

There are a couple of thoughts about my approach to the world and politics that I wanted to toss out here though. First is, when the government and a citizen bump into each other in the street, it should be the government that moves out of the way. That’s about as far as I go in endorsing Libertarianism.

Another thing is that for me, being conservative is closely tied up with the idea of common sense. I don’t know what common sense is or where it comes from, but at some point in my life I realized that I had it, and that’s around the same time (and the same ways) I started realizing that my political/social beliefs are what most people describe as “conservative”.

That’s about all. Maybe I’ll start posting baby pictures here.

Officially Old

Wednesday, January 12th, 2005

I’m not 30 yet, but I am now officially old: my cholesterol levels have been measured and found wanting. No more bacon burgers for me. Ah, hell, with all the mad cow stuff going on, I shouldn’t be eating that anyway.

The raw data:
Overall 4.75 should be under 4.60
LDL 3.06 should be under 3.00

I believe the units are mmol/L.

Christmas & New Year Roundup

Saturday, January 1st, 2005

24th - Schnitzels, potato salad, family Christmas. Best Christmas ever.
25th - Extended family Christmas, salmon, turkey. Pretty good.
26th - Ham. Good. Stay up all night playing Christmas video games
27th, 28th - Blank spot in memory. Probably sleep.

Words to the wise -

  • the drip pan under a broiler is there so the grease drips away from broiled item, not only to prevent the broiled item from frying (as opposed to broiling) but also to prevent the grease from reaching its flash point
  • hot cookie sheets look just like cold ones
  • 400 F is a lot hotter than 350 F. In particular, 400 F gives you 2nd degree burns
  • second degree burns look really cool when they’re healing.
